I needed more seating in my classroom around my small group table, so I saw where someone made stools out of 5 gallon paint buckets. I tweaked their idea and made my own.
Here is how I made them:
1. I went to Lowes and bought 5 buckets and lids for about $4 per bucket. I then went to Hobby Lobby and bought some foam and fabric (which was all 30% off). I also bought some spray adhesive and some thin pieces of round wood ($1.49).
2. I spray painted my buckets green to match my theme. Then I glued the wood to the foam and wrapped my fabric around them. Then I glued the cushion to the bucket lid. I added a little ribbon to give it a little more cuteness.
These are absolutely LOVE these!!!! I am curious to know what kind of paint you used on the buckets? Is it special paint for plastic?
ReplyDelete:)
I used the plastic spray paint! I bought two cans for these 5 buckets. I could have easily gotten a 6th one if I would have wanted :) They have tons of colors to choose from.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable!!! I so want to make them for my reading table for 6th grade!!! Can you come help? :)

ReplyDeleteWe all know how to share!! That is what teachers do best :)
ReplyDeleteHi Elise,
ReplyDeleteI love the stools. They are so cute. I'd like to try your idea. Do you think the stools are too tall for kindergarteners? Do they fit under tables? I am thinking that I could use them at my small-group table. I'd like more details if you are able to e-mail them to me.
Thanks!

Elise,
DeleteI have seen lots of people make them with milk crates for the lower grades. I had thought about making those, but worried they would be too short for my 5th graders. These would be perfect!
Hi Elise! They are so adorable! These bucket seats will come in handy in my classroom. I can't wait to start on this project over the weekend. Where did you buy the round thin pieces of wood? Were they slightly smaller than the lids?
ReplyDeleteStorage is a big problem in our house, so it would be great if these doubled as storage buckets. Any thoughts as to how to safely attach a cushion that could be removed to get to extra art supplies, toys, etc?
ReplyDeleteThese are so adorable. I must make some during the summer for next year. I have seen some made out of milk crates, but these seem sturdier and hide the storage. Ecotistical, on the milk crate stools, they put a little pull ribbon to get the cushion off. I teach high school so I don't know if they'll work, but I will have to try something with them! I've also started following your blog now. :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Our local WinCo grocery store sells five-gallon buckets and lids--think these might work as seats for younger kids?
ReplyDeleteThese are AWESOME! Could you send me more details, please? Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful idea! courtjansen@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteWhoops-should have been courtjanssen@hotmail.com Thanks so much!
DeleteIf you put wooden blocks on the bottom of the "seats" to keep them centered, you wouldn't need to glue them and could use the bucket for storage.
Deletecan i get details too? melissa.goldsmith@jefferson.kyschools.us
ReplyDeleteI think these are super cute. I would like to try and make these over the summer for my classroom next year. Can you send me the detailed plans. My email is ldaniel@evans.k12.ga.us
ReplyDeleteCan you send detailed instructions? Also, did you get your wood circles at Hobby Lobby? I have looked at Joann's and Walmart but couldn't find them.
ReplyDeleteThanks

Could you please send me detail instructions for these. They are so cute and I was looking for something that would double as seating/storage for my toddlers room. My email is jazzynvicci@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog via Pinterest. I too LOVE this idea! Could you also send me more details? jamiegable@ymail.com I'm mostly wondering about finding the right size wood. Did you have to cut it or did the store you buy them from have the correct size? Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteplease send detailed instructions. Also, include photos if available. Thanks

I would love to make these as well! Is it too late to get the detailed directions? yoey26@gmail.com. I can't wait to make these!
ReplyDeleteHi there, I would love some more detailed directions as I had concerns with the milk buckets being too short as well for my 5th graders....Thank you! j_phillips@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute! How did you get the lids back on with the extra fabric on them?
ReplyDeleteI made my own version...but found a seller on ebay that sells padded bucket lids (BUCKET LIDZ- Bucket Lid/Seat-Diamond Plate pad)to be specific!...I got 8 for $35.00 plus shipping. ( i made an offer and told him I was a teacher trying to make creative seating options in my classroom! They are GREAT! I just bought the orange home depot buckets for 2.60 and painted them blue to match the seats! SO much easier and time effective for me!
ReplyDeleteCan you please send me detailed instructions? I would love to try this for my fifth graders. My email address is tmlawson30@hotmail.com. This is such a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI would also love the detailed directions, I am not crafty as a rule. I want to make these for next year. Thanks for the terrific idea! aliciapwatts@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteCould you please send me detailed instructions to MaryVTapia@live.com. Would love to make some for girls camp! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi...I am your newest follower. I found you when I googled paint bucket stools...a teacher in my building told me about them and I have decided to take them on for my summer project! Thanks for sharing...

Tales from a 4th (and 5th) Grade Teacher
Hi there! I absolutely adore this bucket stool idea! I have a small classroom for my 4th graders and need seating that doesn't take up much space. I am thrilled but don't improvise very well, so I need step-by-step instructions. Please email me @ marshahutson@gmail.com. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI love this seating idea. It seems so much more space efficient then the seats made from milk crates. Could you please email me the more detailed instructions. Thanks so much! jane.nuckols@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog from pinterest, and I LOVE THOSE BUCKETS!! Totally on my to-do list for next week. How do you like them (a year later)?
ReplyDeleteVery cute. I think these would be great for reading table. I was also thinking at my computer desk too. I like that I could also store stuff in them. Maybe rainy day toys for inside recess.
ReplyDeleteI too am very impressed with these bucket stools and would like to try them with my fifth graders. Could you please send detailed instructions to hewittfamily1@mac.com. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHi. Love this idea. I teach sixth grade and have no seats for groups. Could you please send me the detailed instructions, please? My email is jstoff77@gmail.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea! If you wouldn't mind sharing more detailed instructions with me as well! I just want the lid to be removable so I can use them for storage as well. Are you able to remove your cushion lids easily? Mcox003@horrycountyschools.net
ReplyDeleteI also love the bucket stools! Can you send me detailed directions when you have a chance?
ReplyDeleteThanks!

ReplyDeleteI have to echo these comments above. I LOVE these and have begun gathering materials for it. I must echo a couple questions too.... where did you find the round wood? I looked at hobby lobby and Lowes said they only do straight cuts. Also, could you send me detailed instructions? I can't wait to get started!! :)

Paint Buckets
ReplyDeleteMaterials: paint buckets with lids (Lowes), spray paint (Lowes), Fabric (Hobby Lobby), ribbon ( Hobby Lobby), Stool foam (circles) (Hobby Lobby),cheap wooden circles (Hobby Lobby),and Hot Glue and Fabric Glue
*I waited until Hobby put all of these items half off, because it it is not half off this week, it will be next week. You can also check with local painters they might donate the paint buckets. I got some, but they were in really bad shape, so I went and bought some instead.
1. Spray paint the buckets and lids.
2. Hot glue the wooden circles to the foam pieces. (low temp glue)
3. Take your fabric and cover them like you would cover a chair. I used the hot glue and fabric glue, because I had both. You can also use a staple gun if you have one on hand.
4. Take your cushion and hot glue it to the lid of your bucket. I used tons of hot glue to make sure that they stayed on all year.
5. I decorated them with a little bit of ribbon.
*** One thing that I did notice was that I teach the older kids. They weigh a little more than I though so when they would sit down sometimes they would slip out from under them. I am going to get some ziplock bags and put some sand in them to weigh them down a little bit. I think that will help with that problem. The stools held up pretty well this year. I am planning on using them again the next school year!
Thank you for posting these... I just started gathering all the supplies and was nervous about the wood part!
DeleteThank you so much for posting these! I made them yesterday and they turned out adorable! I got my buckets from Lowes and they were a nice blue color so I spray painted a stripe of turquoise to cover the logo. I added a stripe of lime green using duct tape at the bottom, instead of ribbon I used ric rac and modge podged over it to protect it. I also used glue and a staple gun to attach them to the bucket lid. I sprayed it with scotch guard to finish it off. Totally cute and adorable with lots of room for storing stuff too! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where you put the wood. Could you please explain that better? madhouse5and2@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWould love to make these for my "littles". They would have a great time with them.
Hi, Could you send me more detailed directions? I went to Hobby Lobby and was not able to find the precut wood so I will most likely be buying wood and cutting it. I'm just not sure how you attached the wood to the bucker and if it was on "inside" part of the circle of covered the entire lid.
ReplyDeleteThanks

Hi-
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these buckets and they would solve a chair shortage in my classroom. I am in the process of making them and am finding that the paint is scratching of quite easily. I can only imagine what they will look like by Halloween once my 5th graders get a hold of them.
Did you have the same problem and do you have any suggestions?
Thanks, Damien of The Reading Buddies
If anyone has a Firehouse Subs near you, they sell their pickle buckets (same size) for $2 and proceeds are donated back to Fire Fighters...that is what I used to make my stools!
ReplyDeleteI made these and they are adorable! However, they chip REALLY easily. I wish I would have primed them first, that may have helped. I sprayed Rustoleum over the spray paint hoping that that would help but it didn't. :( A lot of people asked about the wood, I also ran into problems finding it. So, I bought a sheet of plywood and traced circles using the bottom of the bucket. Then, I cut the circles with a jig saw (my friend's husband did that). I also sprayed Scotch Guard on the fabric. All in all, this project cost about $150 for 12 stools. I am really hoping that they last!
